| Closeup of old mercury open type fixture, on the typical NYC finned eliptical arm hanging of a utility pole. These fixtures were once numerous in the outer boroughs, almost exclusively relegated to the t-poles, but showing up on occassion on standard hex poles. I nabbed this in Bayside, on 220th or 219th Street, halfway between Northern Blvd and Crocheron Park. There is actually a mini run of 3 of them here. Kevin Walsh has sent pics to me of others on nearby streets. This is one of two open type mercs, dubbed "the Wedges" by Kevin. To distinguish them, I call this wedge, "The Scooper", because it looks like an upside down nut scooper to me. |
